Jackson Middle School Robotics Teams

FIRST ROBOTICS AND FIRST LEGO LEAGUE: Jackson Middle School Robotics Teams Participate in the FIRST Lego League (FLL). FLL is part of the FIRST organization that was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, an inventor, entrepreneur, and tireless advocate for science and technology. He holds over 440 US patents. The FIRST organization includes the FIRST Robotics Competition and the FIRST Tech Challenge for High School Students (ages 14-18). FIRST stands for “FOR INSPIRATION AND RECOGNITION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY”.

FIRST began the LEGO League for younger students (9-14 years old) in 1998. Every September, FLL releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each Challenge has two parts: the Robot Game and the Project. Teams of up to ten students, with one adult coach, participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game) and developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project). Roughly one third of a team’s score is based on their Project research and presentation.

FLL Teams are also expected to embody the FLL Core Values. The final third of their score is based on their team work (within their team and with other teams) and on their knowledge of the Core Values and how much they embrace those values within their robotics team and in their everyday lives.

The FLL Core Values are:

  • We are a team.
  • We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
  • We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.
  • We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
  • What we discover is more important than what we win.
  • We share our experiences with others.
  • We display Gracious ProfessionalismTM in and CoopertitionTM in everything we do.
  • We have fun.
