Sheltered ESOL Program - Sheltered Instruction

Sheltered instruction is an approach for teaching content to English language learners in strategic ways that make the subject matter concepts comprehensible while promoting the students’ English language development. At Stonewall Jackson we have a Sheltered ESOL Program for English Language Learners (ELL) who need English as a Second Language instruction. Participation in this Program is determined by the student’s performance on standardized tests.   Students are considered for exiting the Program when they achieve proficient scores in all domains of the Florida Comprehensive English Language Assessment (CELLA) test and a Reading score of three (3) or above in the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). In addition, the IDEA Proficiency Test (IPT) is used as an alternative method for placing students in the appropriate program of ESOL instruction or exiting students as needed.

ESOL Mainstream / ESOL Corriente Regular

In Basic Mainstream Instruction students are taught exclusively in English alongside fluent English speakers. Once out of the ESOL program, students’ academic progress is monitored for two years to ensure academic success.
